Private Property Rights Eroding…

Well, Barack has finally done it. He’s brought socialism into the mainstream. Singling out oil companies, confiscating their wealth, and redistributing it to the American people.

When did stealing become a Christian value Sojourners folks? I know some of you, like Jonathan, don’t buy the income tax as stealing ideas that I lean towards, but I think this is a clear case of government overstepping its bounds, and using its power to destroy a group of people that, at the current time, is being blamed for our problems. And then on top of that, bribing the American people into accepting it. Unbelievable.

  1. You had me up until the “destroy” exaggeration. Frankly, I don’t know what to think about a windfall profits tax. Admittedly, it seems a bit strange.

  2. Can we have a windfall profits tax on all the taxes that Govco takes in?

  3. Something that’s not eroding? The love of Jesus.

Just remember that everything is the Lord’s anyway. You don’t own any private property — it’s God’s.

  4. So, is the government then not stealing property from the person God has intrusted it with?

  5. God made the government — read Romans.

  6. God made man, read Genesis.

Do you really want to talk, or just be a troll?

  7. Romans 13 — “Let every person be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are ESTABLISHED by God.”

Do you really want to talk about God, or are you just feigning it to promote your political agenda. All I see is political maneuvering on a blog of someone claiming to be involved in the ministry of reconciliation. Are you reconciling God or government?

  8. Look, I know the Bible. I know Romans 13, and I know that for it to be properly understood, one must read it in the context of Romans 12, which tells how a Christian should act. Romans 13 does not give the government license to do whatever they want.

People in Nazi Germany really liked that verse, as have many other Christians in nations who were behaving in inappropriate ways. We have a responsibility to behave like Romans 12. We are required to obey the government as far as what they do doesn’t compromise how we are supposed to live. I personally am not ok with any government stealing from people. When the government has the right to take or steal people’s property, we no longer have the right to live. Its that simple.

Monty, I’m this close to refusing to respond to whatever you say. It seems clear to me that you just want to provoke me, and honestly, I’m getting tired of wasting my time.

  9. I’m sorry you feel that way. I could care less about what government is/shouldn’t do. You’re missing my point… I just think you put way too much emphasis on politics when you are a minister of the gospel of Christ.

  10. You’re gonna clarify what you mean by politics? Do you mean American politics, the drama, etc… or do you mean politics in the broader sense. Jesus’s message was extremely political, however in a different way than our political system

  11. American politics… Obama, McCain, Libertarianism… all of this is unnecessary and creates a polluted gospel.

  12. Hello

I’ve just uploaded two rare interviews with the Catholic activist Dorothy Day. One was made for the Christophers [1971]–i.e., Christopher Closeup– and the other for WCVB-TV Boston [1974].

Day had begun her service to the poor in New York City during the Depression with Peter Maurin, and it continued until her death in 1980. Their dedication to administering to the homeless, elderly, and disenfranchised continues with Catholic Worker homes in many parts of the world.

Please post or announce the availability of these videos for those who may be interested in hearing this remarkable lay minister.

    They may be located here:

    Thank you

    Dean Taylor
